Jerry Lawson had both hips replaced during 2011. He is very happy that he made the decision to have these two surgeries and sees them as life changing events. Now when he looks to the future, he sees himself active and enjoying his retirement! His future didn’t always seem this promising. Here’s his story.

Jerry enjoys staying active. In his youth, he played football, basketball, and baseball. Through the years, he added tennis, fishing, and golf to his list of favorite activities.

A few years ago, Jerry realized he was slowing down. He had already quit playing tennis. He knew he had arthritis; but he managed the best he could by taking medicine and cutting back on his activity level. In the fall of 2010, his life began to change in a big way. He was in pain and also having difficulty performing day to day activities. Says Jerry, “I’m not a small man. I’m 6 ‘4” and I feel I was beginning to place a burden on my wife. You know, arthritis is tough on the caregiver, too.”

He went on a golf trip with his friends and struggled to play through one round of golf. After that trip, he picked up the phone and scheduled an appointment with Dr. Fred McGlynn at Tuckahoe Orthopaedics. Dr. McGlynn initially worked with Jerry to try conservative treatments. Jerry recalls, “Dr. McGlynn said that hip replacement was an option; but it was a decision I had to make. He said I will know when I’m ready. He didn’t put any pressure on me to have the surgery. After three more months of struggling, lifting my leg with both hands to get into the car and waking from the pain at night … I was ready for surgery.”

Jerry had his first hip replacement in January 2011. He spent three days in the hospital. Says Jerry, “The physical therapist had me sitting in a chair 12 hours after surgery. On day two, I was walking in the hall with assistance and walking up steps!”

He didn’t stop there. He had the other hip replaced in late November 2011. By Christmas, he was up and about; helping his wife with the holidays. By February, he was back on the golf course!

“I have nothing but good things to say about Dr. McGlynn. He’s a good surgeon and I like that he didn’t pressure me into the surgery.”

Jerry believes hip replacement was right for him, “It was absolutely the best decision for me. I am back to exercising daily, golfing three times a week and spending time with my wonderful family. I believe without question that if I hadn’t had the surgeries, I would have needed a walker and pain medication to get around…and I would have still been suffering. I have nothing but good things to say about Dr. McGlynn. He’s a good surgeon and I like that he didn’t pressure me into the surgery. I tell everyone about him! He did a great job and his team was very caring and helpful throughout the entire process.”
